OOTD: Flirty Summer Florals + Thoughts on Koji’s Dollywink Lashes No.1 in Dolly Sweet

Hello! My name is Tiffany and I’m a beauty and fashion enthusiast based in Los Angeles. Our lovely blogger, Sarah, and I talked about guest blogging a while back and even though I’ve never really did a beauty or fashion blog entry before, I decided to give it a shot. This entry is sort of a fusion between my thoughts on a product and an outfit of the day.

I remember walking through the streets of Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan a few years ago and admiring the multitude of sub-fashions young people liked to emulate. One of the sub-fashions that stuck out to me the most was that of gyarus, particularly those who were decked out in cute, feminine clothes from Liz Lisa. For those who aren’t familiar with Liz Lisa, the clothes and apparel are super girly, sweet and dreamy, with patterns decked out in florals, delicate jewels and lace trims.  For this look, I decided to channel my love for the Liz Lisa brand, by combining today’s floral trends with a couple of timeless staples in Japanese beauty—soft, wavy hair and sweet doll lashes. The look is simple, romantic and perfect for those warm summer days.

Please ignore the clutter in the background ^^;…I kinda match my couch and carpet, don’t I?

For my makeup, the highlights of this look were the soft, luminescent pink cheeks and Dolly Wink Lashes in No. 1 Dolly Sweet. I tried to keep everything simple, since I wanted to show off the lashes without overpowering them with a lot of eye makeup. While gyaru love to wear makeup and false eyelashes, they always apply their makeup in such a way that they still look polished and glamorous without piling on too much.

For my eyeshadow, which you can get a better look of in the next couple of pictures, I used a shimmery rose gold and softly smoked it with dark bronze. For my lips, I used a pink coral color, flecked with subtle gold flakes.

Now I have to be really honest here. At first, I was quite skeptical of the Koji Dolly Winks because I’m not usually one to spend $17.99 for two pairs of Japanese lashes. As cute as the packaging looked, did I really need expensive false eyelashes designed by Tsubasa? What could these lashes offer me that my usual NYX lashes didn’t?

However, after trying them on, I have found that these lashes really did complete the look. They did exactly as they were advertised and really gave me the sweet, dolly, puppy-eyed look that Japanese women love. My eyes are already quite round, so I didn’t notice a huge difference but I can see how they would be great for changing the shape of your eye. They start off shorter at the inner corners and fan out towards the outer corners, thus widening the eyes.  Here is a close up:

Eek, right?! Yes, I know they obviously look fake when I close my eyes and even from close up, people could tell that I was wearing more than just mascara. But really, isn’t that one of the fun things about Japanese makeup? False eyelashes are one way to really up the ante in the glamour department and the great thing is that there are just so many different ways!

My verdict on the Dolly Winks?

4 stars out of 5

  • Will give you that round, doe-eyed look that Japanese girls love
  • The lash band is very thin so you won’t even feel like you’re wearing lashes
  • Super cute packaging!
  • A bit fake-looking from up close but great from far away and in pictures
  • Cost $17.99, which are a little steep for lashes. Be prepared to shell out some $$
  • Good to have on hand when you don’t want to wear lashes that are too thick (boo for spider lashes!) but still want that extra “oomph” for your eye makeup

Since it was such a beautiful day out and I was about to head out to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills with my boyfriend, we decided to snap a few more pictures of my overall outfit.

Dress – Brandy Melville

And here’s a closer snapshot of the shoes I was wearing. I have to say, while gorgeous, these shoes were actually a bit painful -_-x. I barely walked a hundred feet in these before almost sinking into the dirt and falling flat on my face, which is why I don’t wear these heels. Ladies, shoes like these are really just for show.

Shoes – Bakers

The final shot is a close up picture of my hair. I was inspired by a couple of my old Vivi Magazines where the models sported soft, wavy hair with their summer outfits. I find that loose waves with just bit of body can really add a touch of glamour to a simple summer dress without looking overdone. I created these waves with the Herstyler 1-inch clip-less curling wand, which has been pretty popular over the past year. The curling wand offers an S-shaped wave, different from that of a regular curling iron and looks more relaxed and casual.

Since this outfit is not really far from how I usually dress on the weekends when I go out to nice places, it wasn’t that difficult to coordinate. And while this look is not strictly gyaru, I really enjoyed putting everything together to my interpretation of how Japanese beauty trends and fashion continue to inspire me through the years.  Are there any particular styles or trends that you like to channel?
