Why I’m Quitting My Job

It’s been over a week since I’ve last made a post on my blog. I must admit, I have been a tiny bit lazy, but also.. lots of things have happened very recently! And I’m talking about BIG things.

Just to keep you all in the loop a bit (until I can publish a Hawaii post), here’s whats up with my life.

  • Returned from my lovely week vacation in Hawaii last Sunday 4/21
  • I put in my 2-week notice to quit my ad agency job as a designer
  • Been hanging out with friends every single day that I’ve been back from Hawaii (you’ll find out why later)
  • My dad blacked out and collapsed again on 4/26 (this worries me a lot since he’s 80!)
  • Trying to catch up on a bunch of freelance work that was postponed because of Hawaii

Those are just some of the things that have been keeping me away from blogging. To be honest, I haven’t even started editing any of the Hawaii photos. I have so many to edit! All I’ve done was sort them into folders, lol.

Oh well. Anyways, I guess the biggest news is that I’m quitting my full time job. I think most people think I am crazy for doing this… But I like to be a risk taker.

Quitting a full time salary job makes me feel nervous, scared, and a little worried. I know lots of people who don’t even have a job, or let alone their dream job. I was lucky enough to have both of those. *sigh* Time for me to say good-bye to security, benefits, health insurance, and my pride in being an employed professional.

So why am I throwing it all away? It’s quite simple.

  • I want to be a risk taker and do what I won’t be able to do in the future if I had kids
  • I want to be able to see how I survive without the security of knowing that I’ll get a paycheck automatically deposited into my bank account every two weeks
  • I want to be able to devote more time to my blog
  • I want to travel while I’m young
  • I want to struggle a little
  • I want to simply live life

This marks a new chapter in my life.

Have you ever taken a life changing risk? If so, what? Also, what things would you like to see me do while I am unemployed? Haha, and lastly, do you think I should start making youtube videos?

Hi there! I’m actually a new follower of your blog but found this post quite inspiring. I’m kinda-not-really in the same boat but am about to be! I’m a few months away from graduating college but once I graduate, I’ll be without funds and with bills to pay as well. It’s a little scary but sounds like fun at the same time.

Anyways, it’s always great to take a little risk and you’ll probably gain new experiences from it! Do what you can while you’re still young. 😀

Also, best wishes to your father!

    1. aww thanks for following! that always makes me happy 🙂
ahhh~ life after college is really quite an experience! finding your first job and stepping into the real world is very rewarding. i dont think i would have traded anything for my first two years that i spent at my current job. i have learned and grown so much. i really think that it is important to first work for someone in a professional environment before venturing off on your own. good luck to you after college!

  4. So lucky! I wish you luck for your future endeavors and adventures! I really am scared of regretting time spent during my youth.. I need to do so many things, but I don’t know how to make time while working full-time! Especially continuing studies, but all those things require so much time.. and money!

    1. yea… thats the biggest issue in life huh? finding the time and money. it sucks because after college, you have no money. and then when you start working, you have no time? where is the balance~?

i see it two ways. you can either spend your twenties developing your career and travel when you are older… or just travel while you are younger and gain all the experience and culture early on. i think when you are younger, thats when you are really developing your outlook on life, so it’s important to travel and nurture it.

i think i’m pretty lucky because of my career field of choice. i’m a graphic designer so i can actually freelance and still do work from anywhere as long as i have a computer and access to internet.

we all do what we want with our life and time, but its how you want to spend it. i say, make the most of it? experience in the end is greater than money.. since you can’t really take your riches to the grave. cheers!

  5. Wish you the best! I’m sure you’ll be able to handle it, and it’ll be a good and positive change 🙂

    1. thanks! i think it will be a great change! and who knows, if in the end it all doesn’t work out.. i can just apply for another job =P

haha, it ain’t the end of the world to quit a job.

  6. Whaat, giving up a job as a designer? O.O — being a designer is one of the best jobs someone can have in this world!!…but hell yes, i know what you mean. I might say that you will have good chances to prosper in other ways since you are living in the U.S. – where dreams can come true…;)

    Much love from Germany ♥

Can´t wait to see your Hawaii Post!..and take good care of your dad

    1. lolll actually i agree with you. being a designer is friggin’ awesome! i’ve been doing graphic and web design since i was in middle school and i am still very much in love with it. and when i say that i’m quitting, i don’t mean that i’m quitting all design related business. i will still be freelancing.. and if it does come to finding another full time desk job, it would be another design job for sure. i just feel like taking some changes and doing other things as well.

haha, and i guess the U.S. is good? I haven’t really lived in other countries besides China.. but i’m sure dreams do come true all over the world! <3

  7. Hope your dad will be okay!
Good luck dear~ And yes, you should start making vids!

    1. thanks! haha hopefully i can get my shy self infront of a camera sometime after i’m off work!

  8. Oh my! That is something that friends would totally worry about! But you know what you want and you’ve thought about it, so the best to you!

    1. Thanks for the support! Hehe, yea my friends were worried =P

  9. sarah i really admire you, i have to admit most of the reasons you have for quitting are mine too. i think about quitting my job every single day but never really had the courage. But your post really inspire me. I think im getting close to doing the same thing. Really looking forward to your post on your new adventure.

    1. aww thanks so much! it was a really hard decision for me.. debating between having a steady income flow and doing possibly something more with my life!! i think, why not. we are young now and have no commitments, and now’s the time to take risks! i’d rather live life then regret not living it 🙂

  10. I’m sure more good things will happen to you dear 🙂 Just keep smiling and go do what you love 🙂

I can’t imagine having a job as great as yours was but I too am saving up to travel and adventure out! I’m sure you’ll be fine, especially with such a supporting fiance! Best wishes! 😀

    1. thanks so much for your kind words! i’m sure you’ll be able to save up enough to go traveling. i dont think its as much of a money issue as it is with just sorta taking that leap of faith to try doing something different. best of luck to you in your future!!
