Sally Hansen Creme Hair Bleach Review (Eyebrows and Upper Lip Tested)

Ever since high school, I have struggled with the embarrassment of unwanted facial hairs.

I’m not sure about you, but my story goes something like this:

One day I notice little hairs in places that there shouldn’t be any (for a girl), such as my upper lip and forearms. Of course, the first thing I think to do to solve this problem is to sneak into my dad’s bathroom and use his razor and shaving cream.

BAD IDEA! Once the damage was done, I discovered that shaving is a temporary solution and instead promotes the growth of thicker and darker hairs. Just great… now what do I do now that I’ve worsened the situation?

How about Nair Hair Removal Lotion? Yea, I tried this and it works well, but it’s almost the same thing as shaving and smells just awful!! (note: I’m sure the technology has greatly improved since I tried it when it first came out)

So whats left… waxing! Yes, waxing was the solution. Oh no, but my hairs are super thin and it doesn’t do a clean job!! Plus it can be a pain and is messy depending on which kinda wax you get. Also, don’t forget… If you use wax on your face, you need to be careful!! Using it too much on your face promotes wrinkles!

Guh~ No one wants wrinkles!! So if shaving, hair removal lotions, and waxing all don’t work.. Are there any other options?

OMG YES THERE IS! I found this awesome product in my desperation to find a solution and have been using it on and off since high school (on and off because I am lazy on and off, lol).

The solution to all of my problems was Facial Hair Bleach!

I’m very happy to have stumbled across this product when I was younger. I’m also quite surprised by how little this product has changed since then.

Today I will be reviewing the Sally Hansen Creme Hair Bleach and showing before and afters, how to’s, and tips for the upper lip and eyebrows.

You can buy the Sally Hansen Creme Hair Bleach For Face from any drug store or even online for about ~$5. They also have an extra strength version for those of you who have thicker hairs that are more stubborn, but this one is the standard one.

Here are the contents in the box: instructions, bleach cream, activator powder, mini spatula, and mixing plate.

Here’s the back and side of the box also incase you are interested. I just noticed that it says that it has a sweet almond scent.. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it or smelled it, so I will say that is a lie! But it doesn’t smell bad.

It is true that it does not drip though, and it really is quick and easy!! I’m not sure that I notice the Aloe in the formula either, but I’m assuming that it is in there and that it helps since you are applying bleach directly on the skin of your face.

Before starting, it is recommend to do a test on your skin to see if you are allergic. Chances are, you are not. But it never hurts to be careful. I didn’t do a test because I am risky and I dye my hair and bleach my hair a lot, so I assume that I’ll be okay.

Tip: Don’t bleach your facial hair before you plan on going out, as your skin may be a little irritated and red. But don’t worry, it all goes away.

To get started, open up your Activator bottle. and scoop some activator powder onto the mixing tray.

Tip: The spatula does not fit into the new design of the Activator bottle. Try using the other end of the spatula to scoop out your activator powder.

Another thing you may notice with the activator powder is that after you have had it for a few months, the powder will start clumping together. This doesn’t mean that the product does not work anymore, but it probably is a tad bit less effective. I typically cycle out this product every 6 months or so.

Next, use your spatula to scoop out some bleach creme. This should be double the amount of your activator powder. It’s kinda hard to measure this, so you will have to try your best to eye it.

Tip: If you are like me and you like to throw out your directions. An easy way to remember the ratio between the bleach and the activator is that the bleach is the bigger container, therefore you will need double the amount.

Now that you have your two ingredients, you can begin to mix them together on your mixing plate! It’s a really small and cheap plastic card, so you kind of have to be careful to not mix too quickly and to keep all of the powder on the card.

Tip: Mix slowly and press the spatula against the card until you do not feel anymore powder.

After you are done mixing, you should have a creamy smooth consistency and should be ready to start the application!

Now it’s time to apply the bleach to your unwanted hair areas. In my case, it is my upper lip! Try to avoid touching your lips. Once you are done applying, set your timer to 8 minutes.

Tips: Wash your face before with cold water to make sure that your pores are closed. When applying the bleach, try to really cover all of your hairs. Sometimes it is good to apply the bleach going in different directions to make sure that you have it fully coated. Don’t be afraid to apply a generous amount.

Once the 8 minutes is up, I like to use the spatula to scrape off the used bleach from my face. Then I usually rinse it off with water or even face wash.

As you can see, in the before and after photos, my upper lip hairs have been lightened and my skin is slightly irritated. If there are a few hairs that were missed and not bleached (trust me, they will suddenly stand out), you can simply pluck those strays with a tweezer.

Now we are going to have a look at how Sally Hansen Creme Hair Bleach can work for lightening your eyebrows.

This is my eyebrow in its natural color and it has never been dyed before. Btw, this is my first time trying this!

I applied bleach to my entire eyebrow. Follow the same steps and tips as the upper lip application.

If you want a lighter brown, try 10 minutes like I did. But if you want it to be subtle and dark brown, you can do 5 minutes.

This is the result of my eyebrow after 10 minutes of bleaching. It is irritated and red. Also, it is important to note that when you bleach black hair, it will have a reddish tint to it. This is unavoidable as this is how black hair strips colors when bleached.

Here’s my eyebrow with makeup and without any makeup after both of them have been bleached.

Also here are both of my eyebrows with eyebrow makeup on. As you can see, the color is a lot softer as opposed to my natural black eyebrow color.

It looks quite good when my eyebrows have makeup on it. But when my eyebrows are naked, they are super light and you can’t really see them. Haha, I look funny now if I don’t fill them in.

The good thing about eyebrows however is that they grow back quickly.

Would I bleach my eyebrows again? Probably. I can’t say that I would do it all the time though.

  2. I don’t like unwanting hair on my
    upperlip and armpit, legs, forearms
    etc….
I usually wax with wax strips and I
use thread to remove my mustache
    and eyebrow!

This bleach idea sounds abit weird
haha 😛 but I’m glad it works well

    1. i find waxing with wax strips don’t do a good enough job for me. I have to wax with the wax that you heat up and spread onto your skin manually. hmmm, but threading is a good option for facial hairs!! i should just learn how to thread my own hairs, i think its easy to do. and bleaching does sound weird, but trust me it works!

  3. Wow huh! Seems like a pretty interesting product! 🙂

    1. yes, its very versatile 😀

  4. where i can i get this in singapore ): could not find

    1. have you tried amazon or ebay?

  5. nice review and tutorial 🙂 i used this before and then kept the product. but the, when i was about to bleach my eyebrow, then i just realized the activator powder just evaporated. where can i buy the activator powder alone? since i still have tons of bleaching cream.

    1. actually this is the problem that I am having with the activator powder as well. i used to use this product over 8 years ago, and the older version’s powder didn’t turn to mush and “evaporate.” for some reason the new versions of this product does, which can be frustrating! i’ve looked into “sally beauty supply” online and haven’t found any luck with buying activator powder. but i’m sure this must exist somewhere… it’s a pity that the activator powder seems to disappear :C let me know if you find anything!

  6. I’m really scared that my eyebrows will turn orange, i have really black eyebrows, thick too… Is there any chance that my eyebrows will go orange, and if they do, how do i fix it?

    1. Yes. There is a very high chance that your eyebrows will be a bit orange because thats just how black hair lightens. Honestly, you should probably just use an eyebrow mascara makeup to lighten them up if you’re worried about the color.

  7. this review was very helpful! how often do you have to use it?

    1. ideally somewhere between 1-2 weeks. but of course it depends on your hair cycle. i’ve been super lazy lately, so i don’t do this anymore and i just use sally’s facial wax strips (even though wax is supposed to be bad). my laziness always wins!

  8. i know this post was from like last year but i live in singapore and i want to know if this is available in singapore bc from your review it seems like a very good product to use 🙂

    1. hey! i actually don’t live in Singapore, so i have no idea if it’s available there… but i’m sure you can purchase this product online!! 🙂

  9. I have the same problem but mine is worse. I have thick and many hairs on my upper lip and when I wax or shave or use electrolysis you can still see the darkness on my upper lip. And it is extremely dark I tell you and I have to use make-up 24/7 to cover it up. Even that doesnt cover up properly sometimes. I tried to use lightening creams and it doesn’t too much because it’s not my skin thats dark. I will try to let my hair grow and bleach it so that hopefully it covers up the dark shadow caused by the hair root. If there’s anything else I can do, I’d appreciate your advice

    1. aww, i’m sorry you’re having such a hard time with this! just know that you are not alone and that there are lots of others who worry (and stress deeply) about the upper lip “shadow.” it really isn’t something that you can cover all too well with makeup either… really, the best method that i’ve personally found was to bleach. i still use wax strips and sometime tweeze strays as well. i hope that you find a method that works well for you. give bleach a try! it really does work wonders 🙂

      1. Yeah. Will have to let the hair grow and bleach it so that may be I can cover up the darkness. Thank you

  10. So will this actually bleach the skin as well? Or a little bit?

    1. It’s not supposed to bleach the skin…

  11. Is it still available in the philippines?

    1. I have no idea since I don’t live in there~ but I’m sure you’d be able to find it online if you searched around 🙂

  12. i dont know what to do because i use this same product to lighten my eyebrows but only some get lightened others get really bleached and some dont even budge… they stay super black. It looks like a mess.
I put it on at the same time, the same way… i dont tknow why it does that

    1. hmm… have you tried eyebrow mascaras? maybe that’s a better option for you. anyways, lightening eyebrows is pretty high maintenance even if you do get them to lighten evenly (btw i usually have eyebrow hairs that wont budge either). try eyebrow mascara! 😀

  13. Where do I buy sally Hansen bleaching crm in phillipines?

    1. Hi Karina. I’m unfamiliar with whether or not this product is sold there. I’d try calling around locally, ebay, or do a quick google search.

  14. Is it available in japan, yokohama city

    1. sorry for the late reply. hope you found your answer!
