Clairol Shimmer Lights Color-Enhancing Shampoo Review

It has been a while now since I’ve had this product. A friend of mine, Teewa, gave it to me to try out after my hair turned a bit brassy after lightening my hair. The product is called Clairol Shimmer Lights Color-Enhancing Shampoo (blonde & silver). You can get it for about ~$9 from Sally’s Beauty Supply or of course online.

On the bottle, the product claims that its color enhancing shampoo brightens and refreshes blonde, faded highlighted, and silver/ash-toned hair. It is a protein-enriched conditioning formula that tones down brassiness on blonde/gray hair. Removes dull yellow in gray/white hairs.

The product is simple to use. All you need to do is wet your hair. Then lather, rinse and repeat. For extra brightening and color, you leave the second lather on for 3-5 minutes.

This is a purple shampoo, so it could get a little messy in the shower, lol. But it’s really not that bad. I do believe that purple shampoos dry out your hair however, so you may want to limit your usage to no more than once a week. I would actually do it only once every two weeks, however. Also, make sure that you use a hair mask to further protect your hair and add moisture to it.

The product really does a good job in brightening color. It made my hair feel like it was just dyed recently. However, it didn’t do a good job of getting rid of the brassy color. It was able to help tone it down a bit, but not as much as I would have hoped. Also, my hair felt very dry after using the product.

Clairol Shimmer Lights Color-Enhancing Shampoo Rating: ★★☆☆☆

  • probably wont purchase this product again – i believe that it works, but also that it is not the right product for my hair
  • dries out my hair
  • simple to use and affordable
  • really enhances color well giving a rich fresh look
  • didn’t tone down the brassiness as much as i would have hoped for

  1. You forgot to mention the horrible smell! Haha! I agree 100% with you on the review btw :]

    1. lol. the smell doesnt bother me too much for some reason. i guess im used to not having flowery smelling hair products. haha. im smelling it right now, it kind of like over whelming baby powder gone wild

  2. I’ve yet to find a good purple shampoo.. I too find them really drying and they don’t do much for brassiness. I prefer purple conditioner!

    1. i will have to try that out! purple conditioner.. haha sounds a lot better! do you have any that you recommend?

  3. Hello girls!! I just went out the other day and got a bottle of both the Purple Shampoo(Clairol) AND also the same brand Purple Conditioner. I have never used it before. SO I went online to check and see what feedback I could find regarding this product. You guys have been pretty informative and helped me to decide weather to use it or not. THANKS Ladies!

    1. glad to hear that you found the information useful! let me know if you have any questions 🙂

  4. Hi! This shampoo didn’t rid your hair of brassiness because your hair isn’t blonde! Your brassiness comes from red tones, and while the purple toner alleviated excess yellow tones, it cannot neutralize red tones. Shimmer Lights ALSO makes a shampoo for red and brunette hair, and I think that might be a lot more useful for you!

    1. your right, it didn’t do the job before because i wasn’t blonde. the good thing is that it does work now that i have some actual blonde parts in my hair. didn’t know that they had a toner for brunettes either! i actually got this product as a hand me down from a buddy. i’ll have to look into that, thanks for the advice 🙂
